Carlana & Dawn Band:

It was in this period where Cat was able to unleash her creativity as a lead guitarist being influenced by Carlos Santana. Coming from a classical background the electric guitar was new to her when she chose Santana as her mentor in the early 1980’s.

However, she still will not use a guitar pick unless it’s only rhythm guitar. But being a lead guitarist and therefore having to play solos, she plays the way her legendary classical and Spanish guitar teacher Eric Rosaria taught her. No guitar pick! During recording on the Peter Doyle tribute album the song Circles needed to be played with a guitar pick, to ensure having the same sound and feel. Especially at the end with the final refrains. So Cat switched from playing without a guitar pick till the moment she needed to play with one, by keeping the guitar pick close by between her teeth. When the guitar pick was needed she quickly took it out of her mouth whilst playing arpeggios and continued playing with a guitar pick. Most songs however she played without a guitar pick, incl. The Skin Deep tracks. The Carlana & Dawn Band was a new learning event for Jess also having to play heavy keyboard solos and chords during the Santana period.  As they both say: It made us grow.
